Man dies in motorcycle accident

A motorcycle accident on the streets of Liberty Lake claimed the life of a Rathdrum man during the early morning hours of July 4.

Matthew L. Jones, 45, died from blunt trauma to the head, according to a report from the Spokane County Medical Examiner's office.

The Liberty Lake Police Department was dispatched to the corner of East Mission and North Signal roads at 1:27 a.m., police reports stated. Jones "suffered major head trauma and showed no signs of life," the LLPD report said.

The scene was turned over to traffic technicians from the Spokane County Sheriff's Office. As of July 9, law enforcement was awaiting further reports to help determine the cause of the accident, Spokane County Sheriff's Detective Jack Rosenthal said.
 
According to his obituary prepared by English Funeral Chapel of Post Falls, Jones was a longtime Rathdrum resident who was born in Spokane, graduated from Rogers High School and served in the U.S. Army in Germany and Desert Storm. He was awarded two bronze stars. He is survived by his wife, Stephanie, and a son and daughter, all of Rathdrum.
