Take a tour of Half Moon Park
Josh - 5/23/2008

The family and I dropped by the grand opening celebration for Liberty Lake's newest park on Saturday: Half Moon Park in the River District. It's not the world's largest park (about an acre), and the place was jammed with revelers enjoying the freebies (food, ice cream and even light bulbs from Avista) and checking out the new amenities.

There I bumped into my former across-the-street neighbor growing up on Liberty Lake's South Wright Boulevard, Jayson Hunnel. Jayson is now Greenstone's sales and marketing director, so you know he's gonna have nice things to say about the park. I decided to ask him his favorite things about the park, and then check out his level of bias for myself.

Jayson listed three things, and upon further review, I have to admit they were all pretty cool.

1. The bubbling rocks at the "Crater at Half Moon Park"

This is like a super-size, beach-like sandbox for kids. Push a button and water bubbles out of the rocks (picture at left). Then, kids guide the streams throughout the play area by building moats, craters, castles and the like. Toys just keep getting cooler ...

2. The listening tubes

When stormwater flows through this 30-inch tube above, I'm told it sounds like the Spokane River. Jayson said there is a listening tube several feet away near the street by the roundabout, and he and his son carried on a quiet conversation through the tubes between the two points.

3. The roundabout

The landscaping was finished last week just in time for the celebration, complementing the basalt cairns sculptured by local artists Dale Young and Randy Raak.

I've got to hand it to Jayson. He had something worth bragging about. What do you think? Head to the intersection of Holl and Indiana, check it out and let us know.
