River District Rallied for Meeting Tonight

A meeting of the recently formed Community Development Committee is tonight at 6 p.m. at City Hall. Notice arrived by fax to The Splash office Monday morning, but last week by direct mail to residents of Liberty Lake's River District. Such is the sense of urgency felt by some residents in the development north of the interestate.
River District resident Jayson Hunnel, the sales and marketing director for Greenstone Homes and Neighborhoods, River District's developer, has helped alert his neighbors to what many are saying would bring the wrong type of park to the River District -- a 20-acre sports complex that goes against the "neighborhood park" feel Hunnel says River District residents are hoping for.
To understand the crux of these residents' argument, locate the recent letters to the editor here and here.
In short, the group is trying to prevent a change from taking place in the city's comprehensive plan that would put in some specific planning for a sports complex to come about in the River District. The comprehensive plan is a guide cities use not only for internal planning, but to share with other jurisdictions concerning the community's intentions. The River District residents worry that once in the comp plan, it will be easier for the city to get funding for a sports complex through programs like Tax Increment Financing (TIF), the pursestrings of which are controlled at the county level.
For Splash Connect users (and if you're not one, it's easy to sign up), you can see and join a group Jayson has set up to lobby for better community parks planning here.
