Picnic with the beavers
The community is invited this Sunday to the second annual Picnic with the Beavers in the Liberty Lake Regional Park.

The free event, sponsored by The Lands Council, will be 1 to 3 p.m. and will be open to families and individuals of all ages. Light snacks will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch as well.

The event will feature activity stations, including a guided hike, tour of local plants and a Coeur d'Alene language lesson.

Participants are asked to RSVP by today (Thursday) by calling 209-2407 or e-mailing jowens@landscouncil.org.

The Lands Council is an environmental non-profit organization based in Spokane.

CVHS band, color guard to hold car wash and rummage sale
The Central Valley High School band and color guard are holding a car wash and rummage sale Saturday to raise money.

The event is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the high school's south parking lot, 821 S. Sullivan Road in Spokane Valley.

Kiwanis to hold wine tasting
The Liberty Lake Kiwanis  are holding a wine tasting event from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Zephyr Lodge in Liberty Lake.

Tickets for the fourth-annual event are $25 and include food, wine and music.

Tickets are available for purchase by visiting www.libertylakekiwanis.org, calling 995-4043, sending payment by Friday to PO Box 384, contacting a Liberty Lake Kiwanis member, or visiting the Liberty Lake Farmers Market this Saturday.

Lions to offer health screenings
The Liberty Lake Lions Club is sponsoring a free health screening fair Sept. 18 in the Liberty Lake Safeway parking lot, 1233 N. Liberty Lake Road.

The event is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will offer the general public screenings for hearing, vision, glucose and diabetes.

Rotary sponsors ‘Golf Madness'
The community is invited to a Golf Ball Madness event at 5 p.m. on Sept. 25 that is sponsored by the Liberty Lake Centennial Rotary Club.

The event, which costs $10 per person or $30 for a family of four, benefits Polio Plus. It will be held at the Trailhead Golf Course driving range and will include prizes.

Snap photos for directory
Photographers of all skill levels are invited to submit images that best embody the spirit of the community for the 2011 Community Directory Photography Contest, sponsored by Period Publishing and The Splash.

Photos can be of events, places, nature scenes or whatever best represents Liberty Lake in the photographer's mind.

Selected photos may be used on the cover of the 2011 LLCD or on the inside pages of the directory. Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners.

Amateur or professional photographers age 16 years and older are eligible to enter by the Sept. 30 deadline. You do not need to be a resident of Liberty Lake to win.

Library cancels story time event
The Liberty Lake Municipal Library is canceling the Sept. 21 story time for toddlers and preschoolers.

Donate clothes for drive
The Best Foot Forward clothing drive is asking for donations of clothing, shoes, ties, belts and jewelry to be dropped off anytime between Friday and Sept. 19 at the Liberty Lake Safeway, 1233 N. Liberty Lake Road.

For a tax donation receipt, take donations to the Clothing Bank at Spokane Valley Partners, 10814 E. Broadway, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The drive provides professional clothing to men and women for job interviews, white-collar jobs and any other dress occasion.

Book clubs at library
Two book clubs for adults are offered at the Liberty Lake Municipal Library, 23123 E. Mission Ave. The book discussion groups meet the second week of each month.

Class offered for abuse victims
A.R.M.S. (Abuse Recovery Ministry Services) offers free, confidential, weekly classes in Liberty Lake to help victims of domestic violence and abuse.

City hosts Senior Lunch Program
The Senior Lunch Program in Liberty Lake is served Mondays and Wednesdays. Seniors age 60 and older are invited at 11 a.m. at Liberty Lake City Hall, 22710 E. Country Vista Drive.

The recommended donation is $3.50.

Parenting forum to meet
Spokane Valley's Mindful Mamas is holding a parenting forum on the first and third Wednesdays of the month.

The free forum meets from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Liberty Lake Municipal Library's meeting room, 23123 E. Mission Ave.

Breastfeeding questions will be answered, and all parents and caregivers are welcome. The event also is kid friendly. For more information, visit www.spokanemindfulmamas.com.

FOPP looking for concert event volunteers
Friends of Pavillion Park has volunteer opportunities for concert event positions, including helping with publicity and event setup and tear down.

Friends of Pavillion Park meets monthly on the first Thursday of the month and produces the Summer Concert Series, Outdoor Cinema, Liberty Lake Loop Fun Run, Holiday Ball and awards college scholarships each year.

Toastmasters seeking new members
Liberty Lake Toastmasters meets weekly from 5:45 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Denny Ashlock building, 22510 E. Mission Ave.

Guests are welcome to learn more about Toastmasters, gain confidence in public speaking in a safe environment and develop better communication skills.

LL police offer car seat checks
The Liberty Lake Police Department provides free car seat inspections by appointment.

Residents can contact Officer Erin Lance, who is a certified child safety passenger technician, to inspect child car seats and answer questions about proper installation techniques.
