From atop Mount Spokane, through 15 cities and two National Forests, across the state line and to the beaches of Sandpoint, several Liberty Lake couples pounded the pavement last weekend in the third annual Spokane to Sandpoint relay race.

With the team name "Raw Footage," Vaughn and Melissa Jensen, Andrew and Meg Miller, and Travis and Kim Hadley ran day and night in the race for the first time. Their team name has two meanings, Melissa Jensen said. The team likes to take a lot of video on runs - and they were likely to have raw feet by the end of the race.

Teams of 12 tackled the 185-mile, 36-leg race, in which each member ran three legs apiece ranging in distances of three to seven miles.

Other Raw Footage team members included Christopher Arkoosh, Bri Davenport, Russ Wheat, Vicki Pierce and Dave and Janet Pier. (Janet Pier is an employee of The Splash.)

Prior to the race, the couples said they were most looking forward to spending time with each other.

"We are not running for time," Melissa Jensen said. "We are running for fun."

Each member trained a little differently for the race. Melissa Jensen said she prepared by chasing after her five children and running three to five times a week. Kim Hadley said she didn't really train for the race because she recently finished the Valley Girl Triathlon and had already prepped for that event. But she attempted to run or bike every day. Running five times a week was the training regimen for Andrew and Meg Miller, who also are members of the Flying Irish Running Club.

The couples also ran with each other.

Throughout the race, there were contests, including Wild Wig, Awesome Costume, Brightest Outfit and Van-A-Rama, which awarded the prize to the team who showed the best race spirit by decorating their van. Competitors also took a ride on Silverwood's Tremors rollercoaster as part of the race.

The event also was touched by tragedy, with two runners injured in vehicle accidents and one support person on a bike killed by a vehicle that crossed the dividing line. Race organizers said the race will go on in future years, however.

"Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to the individuals, teams, family and friends who have been impacted by the tragedies over the weekend," organizers said in an e-mail sent to race participants.

Raw Footage finished with a time of just over 29 hours, close to their estimation.

"I think this year would be a good gauge in order for us to see what we want to do next year," Meg Miller said.
