Library to create ‘career center’

Those looking for work will soon have a new resource: a jobs and career center at the Liberty Lake Municipal Library.
The library recently announced that it has received a $20,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Liberty Lake is one of 17 libraries statewide to be awarded grants aimed at providing "local residents with the critical services they need to rebound from the economic downturn," Liberty Lake Municipal Library Director Pamela Mogen said in a prepared statement.
The grant program is designed to help community members learn basic computer skills, use job and career resources, fill out online applications, locate job and educational opportunities, file for unemployment benefits and improve interview skills, resumes and cover letters, according to a news release.
Liberty Lake plans to purchase four desktop computers and six laptops. Two or three of the computers will be set up in the jobs and career center, which will be located in the space now used as a study room. One computer will be added to the library's public Internet section, and the six laptops will be available in the library's meeting room for classes or overflow computer use.
The meeting room also will be equipped with a movie screen and speaker system for classes and movies on relevant topics, Mogen said.

The library plans to first purchase tutorial and resume-writing software and a career exploration database, which could be available by December. Mogen said she hopes to have the career center open by February, and the meeting room equipment by spring.
"I encourage anyone who needs these kinds of resources to watch for the announcement of our jobs and career center opening and the classes that will be offered," Mogen said.
