Public invited to comment on park plan update
Liberty Lake residents are invited to a public hearing July 8 to comment on the proposed City Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Trails Plan update.

The 4 p.m. planning commission meeting will be held at City Hall, 22710 E. Country Vista Drive.

The draft update serves as a guide for future park development.

For the past few months, city staff has worked to update the plan with Liberty Lake's current park inventory and the results of a community-wide survey conducted last summer by a residents' park planning committee.

The draft update projects park planning for 2022, when the city is expected to have more than 15,000 residents.

The planning commission will forward its recommendation on the park plan update to the City Council for final approval.

STA agrees to raise fares
The Spokane Transit Authority Board of Directors agreed last month to raise fares for the first time since 2002.

The increase will be implemented in three stages, beginning Jan. 1, 2010 with a two-hour bus pass jumping from $1 to $1.25 and paratransit customers paying 75 cents instead of 50 cents. The following year, bus fare will increase to $1.50 and paratransit fare to $1.25. In 2012, paratransit fare will increase to $1.50.

STA officials say that declining sales tax revenue, which makes up 70 percent of the organization's budget, is leading the need to raise rates.

Ridership of STA has risen 50 percent the last three years, but it's not enough to cover the budget gap, according to the STA. In Liberty Lake, ridership increased 30 percent in 2008.

Bus passes are available for purchase at Liberty Lake City Hall, 22710 E. Country Vista Drive.
