Local author Sherman Alexie, who is known for addressing Native American topics with humor and poignancy, is the main draw of the municipal library's Let's Read Liberty Lake program this month.
The library is bringing the author to Liberty Lake next week, providing showings of his movie "Smoke Signals" and highlighting his book, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian," for the reading program.
The library received a $7,000 grant from the Washington State Institute of Museum and Library Services to produce the One Book program. Last year, the library used the same grant to promote "Marley & Me."
This year, the library is promoting Alexie's novel, which is based on his own experience growing up on a reservation and choosing to attend a local public high school and the tensions it produced. Advertisement
Alexie writes that he was the only Indian at the high school, besides the mascot.
The book is recommended for adults and young adults, said library Director Pamela Mogen. The library is not promoting the book for readers under the age of 13, she said.
The library has 100 copies, and it also is selling the book for $5 for those who want their own, especially for the author to sign, Mogen said.
"It's a very fast read. It's funny. It's sad," Mogen said. "It's not hard to get through it in a day or so."
The library had a tie to Alexie through one of the employees, who went to school with the author, Mogen said. The staff is planning to pull out old yearbook photos and solicit greetings from former classmates of the author to present at his program on May 20, Mogen said.
