Carl and Mara Crowell will open Liberty Lake's first retail pet store, Pawpular Companions Boutique, which will offer products of all price points for cats and dogs of all sizes.
The Crowells are anticipating a soft opening at the end of August and a grand opening mid-September. Store hours will be 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and closed Sunday.
The 1,200-square-foot space at 21950 E. Country Vista Drive, Suite 100, will be owned and operated by the Crowells and will be full of nutritious foods and treats, including grain-free, raw and part-grain options, apparel, accessories, toys and supplements.
"It's all about the animals," Mara Crowell said. "The most important thing is providing healthy, nutritious, all-natural options for pets."
There will be a wide range of pet apparel with "cool gear from camo to couture," Mara Crowell said. The couture line, designed with more feminine and pampered animals in mind, will include dresses, sweaters, jackets, coats and more. The camo line is geared toward the outdoor, hunting, camping or boating animal and will feature jackets, sweaters, lifejackets and other outdoor gear. There also will be a three-way mirror and stage for the animals to model their new clothes.
Accessories available will consist of booties, leashes, collars, bowls, beds, interactive toys, custom doghouses, travel bags and car seats. Advertisement

The Crowells, who live in Otis Orchards, both worked in the corporate world for years but that lifestyle was starting to turn into something they no longer wanted, they said. Mara Crowell frequently traveled to the west side of the state, and it just became too much, she said. Carl Crowell, now retired, asked his wife what her passion was. She wanted to open a pet boutique, she said.
The Crowells came to the area four years ago and thought Liberty Lake would be the most opportune place to open the store. It's a fast growing community with lots of opportunity that was pet-friendly, Mara Crowell said.
"It always seemed like a great place to own a business for us," she said.
The Crowells believe their store should do well in Liberty Lake because when it comes to competitors, "there are none around," Carl Crowell said.
The Crowells want to make their store an interactive environment for pets and their owners. They are planning on having small tables and chairs outside the store for owners and pets to relax and enjoy the atmosphere.
"We want to create excellent relationships with our community and create repeat visits from customers who have knowledge of our products," Mara Crowell said.
The Crowells own an 11-year-old Bichon who will accompany them to work each day.
Questions about the boutique can be directed to pawpularcompanions@gmail.com. A Facebook page also is in the works.
"We are finally doing what we want to be doing," Mara Crowell said.
